APPLICATIONS OF BARITE BASED ON GRADE

01. Oil and Gas Off shore industries/ Applications

The one industry that consumes Barite the most is the oil and off-shore drilling industry, which means Barite plays a huge part in the global economy. About 80% of Barite produced globally is used for oil and off-shore drilling as a weighing agent. The heavyness of Barite prevents the explosion of gas or oil while drilling.

02. Chemical industry / Applications

Carbonate, chloride, oxide, hydroxide, nitrate, peroxide, and sulfate are the major barium chemicals acquired from Barite.

03. Paint industry / Applications

In the paint industry, Barite is used as a filler. Some playing cards contain Barite in between the paper fiber that fills the paper with a very high density. White pigment in paints is manufactured from Barite. In that case, Barite should be free from mud, clay, or siliceous minerals.

04. Medical industry / Applications

The part that Barite plays in the medical industry is vital. Mainly, Barite helps in taking X-rays. If a patient needs a diagnosis of the gastrointestinal tract, he will be given a small cup of liquid that contains a barium powder in a milkshake consistency. Its density prevents X-ray penetration. Thus, the outline of the gastrointestinal tract becomes visible so that the exact problem can be determined. For taking an X-ray of the throat, the diagnosis must be made immediately after swallowing Barite solution.

05. Drilling muds

The most important application of Barite is in drilling muds. To be specific, 85% of the world's total Barite consumption is for drilling fluids. Barite is used as a weighting agent for drilling muds in petroleum wells. Barite, as a non-reactive solid, is used to increase mud weight up to 22 PPG. It is crushed and mixed with water and then pumped into the drill hole. The mixture's weight counteracts the force of oil and gas when it is released from the ground.

Barite adsorbs water and is necessary to add excess water to prevent the reduction in fluid in the ongoing drilling process.

The softness of Barite acts as a lubricant and prevents it from damaging the drilling tools and reduces the friction in the drilling string. In this process, mainly Barite with 90% of Barium with 4.15 specific gravity is used. For offshore drilling, a higher specific gravity of 4.2 is required. Barite is extensively used as a weighting agent in oil and natural gas drilling as well.

06. Rubber / Applications

Barite is used as a filler and extender in rubber products. It is added to rubber compounds to upgrade its durability. In the rubber industry, 99.5% Barium sulfate is usually preferred. As such pure forms are not found in Barite, it has to be bleached before it is used. Blanc fixe, known for its acid resistance properties, is used as a filler and extender in the rubber industry and can be added to the rubber compounds to upgrade their durability.

07. Usage of Blanc fixe / Applications

Artists use Blanc-fixe as a watercolor as it is widely used as a base for paper coating, lake color. Normally, powdered Barite has been extensively used as a filler in the paint industry.

08. Future outlook / Applications

Barite is mainly used in the petroleum industry. Petroleum exploration will continue to progress. As long as petroleum continues to be the chief energy source, the market for Barite promises to stay on top.
